Overview - Afternoon General English - 12 hours a week

This 4 day General English course in the afternoon (Monday to Thursday) is designed for students not preparing for a formal exam. It develops all key English skills, including speaking, listening, writing, reading, as well as vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar, through eal life topics and practical activities. This unique programme helps you communicate with real people in authentic social settings, including Social Fridays, our weekly extracurricular sessions designed to help practise outside the classroom, in the real world.

Course Details

Week 1 Learn when to use present simple and present continuous – Learn common verb phrases, prepositions of place and clothing – Learn how to describe someone, their appearance and clothing Week 2 Learn when to use past simple and past continuous – Learn prepositions of time and verb phrases– Learn how to discuss past holidays Week 3 Learn be going to and present continuous for the future – Learn how to paraphrase– Learn how to discuss future plans Week 4 Learn how and when to use the present perfect with yet, just, already – Learn when to use make and do, and when we use adjectives ending -ed and -ing– Learn how to talk about shopping and housework Week 5 Learn how to use comparatives and superlatives – Learn some more time expressions – Learn to describe and compares towns and cities Week 6 Learn when we use will / won’t – Learn opposite verbs and adjective + prepositions – Learn to discuss optimism and pessimism Week 7 Learn verb + verb formations– Learn modals of obligation– Learn how to discuss learning a language Week 8 Learn how to use should and get – Learn how and when to use the first conditional – Learn how to give advice to someone Week 9 Learn second conditional and present perfect with for and since – Learn how to write a biography– Learn how to discuss phobias and your fears Week 10 Learn how to use the passive and used to – Learn word building and noun formation – Learn how to discuss school life and inventions Week 11 Learn how to form phrasal verbs and express movement – Learn some common phrasal verbs– Learn how to discuss sports and activities Week 12 Learn the past perfect and reported speech – Learn when to use say or tell – Learn how to gossip about something
